Tumblr’s open and accepting community can be a bit of a double-edged sword. While it’s great to have a place where you can feel comfortable and discuss your issues with friendly supporting people, people on tumblr seem to be a bit too coddling at times. Like, as yaz said, there are young and impressionable people on here who might adopt a personality or identity because they think it’ll help them fit in, not because they believe it truly identifies themselves. And instead of moving on from these false identities as they become more secure and sure of themselves, the overly supportive community on tumblr will coddle and reaffirm an identity that doesn’t truly fit the person.
It’s not that people are wrong for being supportive, it’s just that putting this praise on someone for their identity can make them feel shamed/embarrassed/confused when they realize that they are not that person. Social justice on tumblr doesn’t help with that either. I’m sure most of us know of some variation of someone on tumblr identifying as something, coming out saying they were wrong and have changed, and then being harassed by SJ bloggers about being sexist/homophobic/transphobic/blahblahblah. Hell, on this site if you ever even think of talking about gender/sexuality/identity issues, you’re inevitably gonna piss off someone and be labeled as a terrible person.
Wow, this is way too much rambling for me. I don’t really have a point to all this. In the end, people can use tumblr as a safe place. The community, while at times can be toxic, is still a force of good.
tl;dr: social issues kinda suck on tumblr and we have no one to blame but ourselves
